MPD

MPD, short for Music Player Demon, is a program that runs in the background playling songs along its playlist. For this reason, the computer's soundcard is used (or optionally, using Icecast, the output is streamed into the network).

MPD itself has no frontend, it's just a demon. A popular console based frontend is MPC.
